Why not flip a coin?
Why not flip a coin?
1 Chronicles 24:4 - A larger number of leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than among Ithamar’s, and they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of families from Eleazar’s descendants and eight heads of families from Ithamar’s descendants. They divided them impartially by drawing lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.
Imaging you have been put in a really important position in a company, to make decisions about the future of peoples lives, specifically in the area of employment…
What strategy will you put in place to help you make those decisions?
Would you wait on the Lord for a Neon sign that clearly states the decision you have to make…or what about this idea…
What about finding a coin in your pocket and flipping it to heads or tails to help you make your decision.
Now some of you are probably thinking right now…Flipping a coin isn’t very spiritual… I would rather go to the neon sign option and wait for a clear sign from God…
Wrong option….
Did you know a lot of decisions in the temple were made by casting lots, which was almost like flipping a coin? Casting lots was considered to be very spiritual and was done by a priest who carried two rocks in a pouch under his breast plate. Those two stones were called Urim and Thummim and just like the coins, they were thrown in front, or as the word says drawn out as lots.
I pray this analogy today can help you with making decisions in the Lord. I know I have lost many nights sleep because I have made my decision making so stressful. I have to admit I the past I have been a person who hasn’t made a decision unless I have heard clearly from the Lord…. And don’t get me wrong, that’s not a bad thing, however, God doesn’t always guide us through clear neon signs, sometimes it is through something simple.
What I like about this story today is; once the decision was made by casting lots or stones, they accepted it and got on with life. That’s the key… however you make your decision, once you have made it keep walking in life. Don’t keep looking back and dwelling on the thought of “did I make the right decision or use the right method to make that decision?”.
Walk it!!!
